A History Lover's Guide to Norfolk

Norfolk’s history dates back to 1682 when it was first founded. It was settled by an Englishman named Adam Thoroughgood, who ultimately named Norfolk after his birthplace, Norfolk, England. From the time it was settled to the present day, countless battles, wars, and fires influenced and shaped Norfolk to be the diverse, eclectic and deeply-rooted historic city it is today.

Below you will find a two-day itinerary full of our historic sites, tours, how to explore our naval history and all the best historic places to dine.

Day One

Check into your historic accommodations: the Glass Light Hotel, a 1912 boutique hotel and art gallery or Four Eleven York, an 1890s Victorian home-turned-boutique-inn in the heart of the Freemason District. Now, drop your bags and start exploring!

Take a self-guided tour

@erikdeseanbarrett, Instagram

Cannonball Trail

The best way to jump into our history is through the Cannonball Trail, a walk-it-yourself tour meandering through 400 years of Norfolk and American history. The trail winds through the ancient cobblestone streets of West Freemason, the earliest residential streetscape in Norfolk. Then, it leads Downtown where turn-of-the-century buildings stand in the shadows of modern structures. Along the trail, you will notice narrative plaques which mark places and events of historic interest. Allot a full two hours to complete the entire tour.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

Along this tour, you will come across St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, built in 1739. In addition to being the oldest building in Norfolk that has survived all the wars and fires, the church is a point of interest because of the cannonball lodged in the side of the building. This cannonball dates back to the Revolutionary War (more specifically New Year’s day of 1776) when Lord Dunmore was fleeing Norfolk (due to defeat) and fled to his ship just offshore. From his ship, he fired this cannonball, which can still be seen today.

MacArthur Memorial

Visit the MacArthur Memorial, dedicated to the life and legacy of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. The Memorial also pays tribute to the millions of Americans who served during the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Located Downtown, the Memorial consists of a museum, archive and research center, education center, theater, welcome center and gift shop. A visit to the Memorial will allow you to explore the life of one of America’s greatest and most complex leaders. Admission is free.

Explore a Historic Home

Hunter House Victorian Museum

Book an advanced reservation to tour the Hunter House Victorian Museum during its open season (typically April–December). Constructed in 1894 for local merchant and banker James Wilson Hunter and his family, Hunter House was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style and serves as a rich example of Victorian decorative arts and architecture both inside and out. The Hunters were avid travelers, and you can explore the family’s collection of furniture, books, decorative objects and more from the Victorian era inside.

Myers House

Moses Myers, one of America’s first millionaires, a leading citizen and Norfolk’s first prominent Jewish-American family that composed the region’s entire Jewish population for over a decade, built the Moses Myers House in 1792 for his family. The home was passed down through several generations of the family, and today, about 70 percent of the current collection of furnishings is original to the first generation of Myers. The furnishings reflect the French influences, which were prevalent during this time period. Visitors must call ahead to schedule a tour.

Hermitage Museum and Gardens

The Hermitage Museum and Gardens is an early 20th century 42-room historic mansion on 12 acres of semi-formal gardens, forest and wetlands along the Lafayette River. Hermitage founders and residents William and Florence Sloan were wealthy New Yorkers who moved to the South and constructed this beautiful mansion in 1908. The Sloans had a great interest in the arts and were cultured collectors. With over 5,000 objects, the Sloane Collection spans 5,000 years of art history and represents over 30 countries. Today, you can tour this historic museum home for free Tuesdays through Sundays.

See a show

Attucks Theatre

The Attucks Theatre is a historical icon in Norfolk and was the heartbeat of Church Street in the 1920s. It played a crucial role for African Americans in Norfolk as one of the first theaters in the United States to be designed, financed, built and operated by only African Americans.The hustle and bustle this theater brought to Norfolk was paramount in the city gaining its “Harlem of the South” status. Today, you can attend a show at this theater and relish in its beauty.

Dine in a historic carriage house or old church

@peterpalmer489, Instagram

Freemason Abbey

Freemason Abbey encompasses the three pillars of our city: astounding art, rich history and a thriving culinary scene. The building that Freemason Abbey is housed in was once a church and dates back to 1873, making it one of the oldest establishments in the city. You will see that the restaurant’s stained glass windows are stunning works of art and original to the building. As for their menu offerings, you can’t go wrong with their seafood dishes, and we highly recommend their award-winning She Crab soup!

@jessy08maus, Instagram

Omar’s Carriage House

Omar’s Carriage house is originally an 1840s–you guessed it–carriage house. The mansion that this carriage house once belonged to was destroyed back in the 1930s, but the carriage house stood untouched. Once inside, look up and spot the large opening where hay used to be loaded into carriages. Delight in a fabulous menu of American-Mediterranean fusion plates while soaking up a bit of history.

DAY 2

Caffeinate In A Victorian House

Mea Culpa

Start your day caffeinated with a latte from Mea Culpa, a café housed in a historic 1904 Victorian residence. Most locals will suggest this café for their waffle sandwiches since the owner once ran a favorite foodie pop-up called Waffletina. However, in looking for a more permanent space, Mea Culpa was born and now has much more than decadent waffle sandwiches. Customers will find local Three Ships coffee and espresso with house-made seasonal syrups that make their lattes extra special.

Admire the Norfolk mace

Chrysler Museum of Art

In 1754, Norfolk was gifted a mace by the lieutenant governor of colonial Virginia Robert Dinwiddie. A mace is a highly ornamented staff that was once used as a weapon of war during medieval times but eventually transformed into a prestigious symbol of rank and authority held within government. Norfolk’s mace survived destructions; it was purposely buried to survive fires, hidden under hearths to avoid being seen by Union troops and even disappeared for some time before being found in a pile of trash. Now, this beautiful 41-inch long silver mace can be viewed at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Gallery 209.

Take a Self-Guided Tour

Fort Norfolk

Fort Norfolk is the last remaining of 19 harbor-front forts authorized in 1794 by President George Washington. In the Civil War, Confederate forces seized the fort and used its magazine to supply the CSS Virginia (Merrimack) during its battle with the USS Monitor. In 1862 the fort was recaptured by the Union Army and used as a prison. Guided tours run from Noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Entry requires a form of ID.

Quarantine Road

Unrelated to any recent pandemic-associated quarantine, Norfolk’s Quarantine Road (constructed in 1783) holds significant history as one of the oldest roads in Norfolk to still exist. The purpose of the road was to minimize the spread of infectious diseases such as Yellow Fever from foreign passengers and merchants. Take a stroll or bike down the throughway (crushed seashells line the way) to locate the historic maker that resides near Old Dominion University.

Haunted Tour

With history comes haunts. Many of our historical sites are tied to ghost stories, folklores or tragedy, but the best way to learn these legends is through a guided tour. Check out Norfolk Tour Company’s Haunted Norfolk Tours. They will take you to places like old cemeteries, the Wells Theatre and more. Prepared to be spooked!

Explore Our Naval History

Victory Rover

You will have a wealth of knowledge when taking part in a Victory Rover Naval Base Cruise, so hop on board and learn about the Port of Virginia, shipbuilding, history of Norfolk and the most anticipated sight, the world’s largest Naval Base, Naval Station Norfolk. Not everyone has access to the base itself, so this is the next best way to take in the sights of the mighty destroyers, awe over aircraft carriers, sneak a peek at the submarines and learn about all the other crucial vessels that may be in dock. Pictures are more than encouraged!

Bus Tours

New for 2024: take the Norfolk Naval Station Bus Tour from $20. Get on board for an approximately 50 minute to one hour guided bus tour of Naval Station Norfolk – the world’s largest Naval installation. Our tour guide will provide a “Navy-approved” tour that includes the homes of the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, Chambers Field Air Station, the ships of the fleet and much more.

Have a Drink or Meal in a Historic Building

@press626_awinebar, Instagram

Press 626

Press 626 Cafe and Wine Bar is housed in a historic 1906 Victorian home that once served as a bank. Wines are pulled from the former bank vault behind the bar and served to visitors relaxing in cozy nooks and on the front porch. Wines are enjoyed best when paired with an ever-changing menu created from local, in-season produce.

Razzo

Razzo is a well-established and very loved Italian restaurant in Norfolk housed in a nationally recognized firehouse building dating back to 1923. The exterior of the firehouse looks identical to that of its past, but the fire engines doors are now made of gorgeous mahogany wood. Enjoy local favorites like stuffed eggplant, lasagna or brick oven pizza under their outdoor lighted patio or inside the firehouse where you can picture the heroic work that once lived under this roof.

Byrd & Baldwin

Byrd & Baldwin, one of Norfolk’s fine dining staples, comes with a fine amount of history too. Built in 1906 as home to a real estate investment firm of the same name, the property underwent roughly 30 years of vacancy and neglect before being purchased and painstakingly preserved. The building’s architectural integrity was kept intact to precisely reproduce mahogany trim, leaded glass and skylights and sliding paired entry doors. Be sure to note the original safe and building name chiseled on the facade as you’re enjoying an upscale meal at this traditional steak and chophouse.

By now we hope you have learned a lot about Norfolk’s long past, but know that this itinerary doesn’t encompass all that there is to know either. Check out our historic webpage for even more ideas, attractions and historical fun.

Best Cheese Boards in Norfolk, VA

In recent years, charcuterie boards have undoubtedly taken the world—or at least social media—by storm with artful arrangement of colors, textures and flavors. Many Norfolk restaurants are on board with the trend of curating combinations of cheeses, cured meats and pickled veggies from across Virginia and beyond. Here are eight Norfolk restaurants featuring cheese and charcuterie boards almost too gouda to believe.

The Birch

@thebirchbar, Instagram

Who says cheese only pairs with wine? At The Birch, Norfolk’s first craft beer bar located in the eclectic Chelsea neighborhood, there’s a beer, cider, mead or seltzer to suit every palate imaginable. Speaking of pleasing palates, let’s talk about the boards. Their build-your-own option features a fine selection of artisanal cheeses and charcuterie—choices we can nearly guarantee you haven’t tried before. From there, choose exceptional accompaniments like smoked onion jam, spicy plum chutney, whole grain mustard and wildflower honey, followed by sides such as pickled green tomato, Castelvetrano olives and balsamic onions.

Crudo Nudo

@crudonudo_nfk, Instagram

Note: Crudo Nudo was temporarily closed in 2025 due to a devastating fire. As the restaurant prepares to reopen in early 2026, here’s a look at what to expect:

We can’t get enough of the crudo (raw fish) or the nudo (housemade pasta) at this intimate Ghent restaurant. But trust us when we say their Spanish Meat and Cheese Board is a must. Start with a nutty manchego drizzled with honey before diving into the iberico chorizo. You can go just cheese or just meat, but that tasty combination is what truly transports you to Spain, right in the heart of Ghent.

Four Eleven York

Nestled in Norfolk’s charming, historic Freemason District, Four Eleven York combines sophistication with comfort to welcome guests into their unparalleled boutique inn and dining experience. They also combine an ideal assortment of bites on their cheese and charcuterie board. Each board comes with three cheeses, two types of charcuterie, olives, honey, candied pepitas and crackers. Cheeses rotate by season and availability, but a recent highlight was a bleu cheese known to persuade even the most steadfast non-bleu cheese lover.

The Grilled Cheese Bistro

This adored Downtown eatery is hailed for their substantial sandwiches oozing with cheese and packed with mouthwatering ingredients. Along with their enticing grilled cheeses and hand-cut fries, the Bistro offers cheese in its purest form: the GCB Cheese Board. It comes with a selection of four cheeses, meats and crostini, olive tapenade and a seasonal jam or chutey. Pro tip: opt for the paired bottle of wine for a few dollars more and you’ll have a date night or just a tasty bite done right.

Mermaid Winery

There’s hardly a better match than wine and cheese, so where better to experience a perfect pairing than at Norfolk’s own urban winery? At Mermaid, they focus on small lots of well-balanced wines using Virginia grapes. Enjoy a flight of Mermaid wine paired with a Grazing Board: a selection of three cheeses served with the chef’s selection of accoupaniments. Choose from aged Manchego, a housemade farmers’ cheese, brie, Honey Bee Goat Gouda, Blue Shropshire, Black Bomber extra mature cheddar or a mermaid malbec cheese from Virginia.

Press 626

@press626_awinebar, Instagram

If you need an Instagram-worthy board in your life, you need to visit Press 626. Ghent’s beloved wine bar features a Mezze Cheese Board which features a selection of three cheeses, olive tapenade, pickled vegetables, dried apricots, pistachios and toasted sourdough. And, for just a few extra dollars, you can add some charcuterie to the mix. Pair this incredible selection with Press’ extensive wine list or cocktail program, and you’ve got yourself a grand start to a great evening.

Waters edge Winery

Savor a culinary delight at Waters Edge Winery with their exquisite Seasonal Charcuterie offerings. Crafted to perfection, these delightful platters cater to both solo explorers and those sharing the experience with loved ones. Indulge in the symphony of flavors, featuring a variety of seasonal meats and cheeses, complemented by housemade jam, nut-free pesto, compound butter, and toasted baguette slices infused with garlic oil. The Seasonal Charcuterie is a celebration of artful pairings, enhancing your wine-tasting experience at Waters Edge Winery.

Norfolk Restaurants Serving Mocktails

Many of Norfolk’s restaurants are celebrated for their phenomenal cocktail programs. But, what about the booze-free bunch? Not to worry. You can find a great selection of nonalcoholic drinks in Norfolk. Below we’ll share some top options for crafted mocktails featuring fresh (and refreshing) ingredients, some enhanced with bitters, some incorporating zero-proof alcohol and all worthy of a guilt-free sip.

Alkaline

Alkaline is known for many things: addictive ramen, sticky wings and lumpia, tots so good they don’t make sense, must-have miso butter cake and superb cocktails. Luckily for non-imbibers, items from the regular cocktail menu can be made into mocktails. At Alkaline, much time and energy is devoted to preparing the crave-worthy menu of both foods and beverages, and their mocktails are treated no differently.

Crudo Nudo

Here’s a menu you simply can’t go wrong with. The crudo (raw fish) is expertly prepared and artfully and minimally dressed with salt, spice and citrus. The nudo (housemade pasta) is tenderly crafted and adorned with fresh and flavorful ingredients. Believe it or not, things get even more adventurous when you dive into their crafted drinks. We recommend chatting with one of their top-notch bartenders and letting them create a concoction just for you (promise you’ll love it).

Gershwins

Known for their roaring ‘20s vibe, this “speakeasy” style bistro features live music, including jazz and tunes played right from their piano bar. In addition to a cocktail menu highlighting drinks from various decades, Gershwins features an extensive non-alcoholic drink menu with many beverages crafted using Ritual Zero Proof spirits. Take, for instance, their Bohemian, featuring alcohol-free gin, elderflower syrup, grapefruit juice, egg white and bitters. Another popular option, the Grand Illumination is made with non-alcoholic whiskey that’s cherry wood smoked and garnished with orange peel and bitters.

Orapax

Courtesy of Orapax

Located in Norfolk’s Chelsea neighborhood, Orapax has been cherished in the Norfolk restaurant scene for over 50 years. Serving traditional Greek foods plus specialty pizzas and vegan and gluten-free options, their menu has something to please everyone, including non-imbibers. Their beverage menu features a special section of non-alcoholic drinks that include juices, teas, ginger beer and spritzers. A local favorite is the Sparkling Lavender Lemonade made with refreshing Perrier sparkling water, fresh lemon juice and lavender syrup topped with fresh rosemary and blackberries.

Local Breweries

Chances are, if you sidle up to the bar at any of our local breweries, they’ll either have an N/A beer or small selection of mocktails to offer you. Just ask!

Only you

The Ginger Sorel Sour and Free Spirit at Only You

Located on the third floor of the Veil at 2314 Colonial Ave., Only You offers a large vinyl collection, which you can hear spinning most nights of the week. In addition to a carefully curated cocktail list, the menu also features a trio of excellent mocktails, including a Ginger Sorrel Sour made with Hibiscus Tea, Ginger-Thyme Syrup, Lemon; a No Coquito, crafted with Lyres N/A Rum, Coconut Milk, Coconut Cream, Cinnamon Demerara, Vanilla; and a Free Spirit, made with Honey Miso Yuzu Syrup, Calamansi, Soda.

Press 626

This locally loved wine bar surely knows its way around a corkscrew, bar key and shaker. In addition to boozy drinks, they also feature a lovely selection of Garden Lemonade Spritzers made with fresh squeezed lemon juice and herbs. Quench your thirst and enjoy the subtle elegance stemming from flavors of lavender rosemary, chamomile orange and pomegranate sage.

80/20 Burger Bar

Dive into a world of flavors at 80/20 Burger Bar, where non-alcoholic options take center stage! From refreshing wines to flavorful beers and a cocktail list that goes the extra mile, there’s something for every palate. What makes it even better? For every non-alcoholic drink you enjoy, $1 goes towards supporting mental health access in the restaurant industry through the Burnt Chef Project. Sip, savor, and make a difference—one delicious drink at a time!

When a restaurant comes with its own apothecary bar, you know you can expect good things to come in stylish glassware. Saltine’s drinks are focused on utilizing fresh ingredients from local gardens, bringing their craft selection a step above your average “happy hour.” Many of the drinks on their apothecary bar menu–which features housemade essence, oils and syrups–can be made into mocktails.

Freemason Abbey

Step into the cozy charm of Freemason Abbey, a converted church with rich history. Enjoy the inviting ambiance while sipping on refreshing mocktails like the Sparkly Blue Pearl drink—making it the perfect spot to relax and unwind with a touch of history. They have an extensive mocktail list that will leave for tastebuds dancing.

Stockpot

@thestockpotnorfolk, Instagram

We adore Stockpot for its made-from-scratch options that never make us feel guilty for indulging in comfort food. The same goes for their craft non-alcoholic beverages. Their refreshers come in flavors like pineapple mango or blood orange coconut ginger. Or, you may opt for a lavender basil lemonade or cranberry limeade spritzer. Whatever you choose, rest assured you can indulge to your heart’s content with these fresh and health-conscious ingredients.

Want to make your own mocktails?

Let’s get to shopping and shaking.

Ceremony

Located inside Less Than in Ghent, Ceremony is the region’s first non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirit shop. The sips are sophisticated and health-conscious with most selections having no added sugar and zero calories, plus being vegan and gluten-free. Happy hours just got a lot happier with a trip to Ceremony.

Ghent Grab & Go

Whatever you’re thinking, this is certainly not your average convenience store. Drinks are carefully curated and feature both local and regional makers. Unlike most neighborhood markets, they have a great selection of non-alcoholic spirits. You can grab a bottle of your favorite booze-free brand, plus plenty of options for mixing, to create your very own mocktail on the go.

Norfolk’s historic houses are decorated for the holidays. The Hunter House Victorian Museum, rich in architectural details, displays the Hunter family’s collection of furnishings and decor, adorned for a Victorian Christmas. The Myers House, an elegant Federal period home dating back to 1792, was built by one of Norfolk’s first Jewish residents and is decorated for Hanukkah.

Savor dinner at the historic Omar’s Carriage House, whose original patrons were horses! Converted to a restaurant in the 1940s, Omar’s features American-Mediterranean fusion paired with fabulous wine selections.

Enjoy your evening aboard City Cruises Norfolk for their Grand Illumination Early Dinner Cruise from 3:30 to 6 p.m.  Start the festivities with great food, a grand view from the water and unforgettable entertainment. Opt for a shorter cruise on the Victory Rover, which offers 30-minute harbor lights tours during the holiday season. End the evening with front row seats at Norfolk’s Grand Illumination that kicks off the third Saturday in November at 7 p.m. Or experience “Garden of Lights” at the Norfolk Botanical Garden by foot or tram through two-and-a-half miles of twinkling lights.

Ways to Make Summer Last in Norfolk

It happens every year. One minute, you’re stretched out on an Ocean View beach reapplying sunscreen, and the next, “Back to School” ads are intrusively popping up on your devices. “How can summer be over already?” you wonder. “We just started having fun!” Not to fear, our summer-lovin’ friends. Norfolk’s balmy weather, endless outdoor activities and fabulous festivals allow you to experience a longer summer season. While visitors in other regions are breaking out the boots and overindulging in pumpkin-spiced everything, here in Norfolk, we’re still hopping on boats, booking tickets to outdoor performances and enjoying freshly caught seafood plus local brews from the finest waterfront patios. Join us, won’t you? Here are some ways to make summer last longer in Norfolk.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Beach Days

Let’s start with the obvious. Summer is meant to be enjoyed on the sand, waves lapping at our toes. Beach days don’t have to cease just because August is ending. In fact, post-Labor Day outings in Ocean View and East Beach mean less crowds and more space to spread out with a blanket (or a luxury picnic). And, if you’re traveling with your four-legged pooch, you can bring your trusty companion along for sand and surf following the Labor Day holiday. Whether you spend the day lounging, fishing, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding, be sure to get in at least one more beach day at Ocean View.

Water Activities

If you’re more on the active side, take advantage of Norfolk’s 144 miles of shoreline with a water excursion. How about paddling on the Lafayette River to get in touch with Norfolk’s beautiful nature. The season isn’t over yet, and now’s the perfect time since scorching hot days have ended. Or, maybe you’d rather sit back and relax on a cruise to learn more about the region or experience an end-of-summer dinner cruise. Fishing will surely keep you in the spirit of summer, and we’ve got just the place to reel ’em in, then enjoy a frosty beverage and appetizer on site. Here are some more water activities to soak in the final days of summer.

Tides Games

Did you know the Norfolk Tides play through mid-September? There’s still time to root, root, root for the home team while enjoying all the popcorn you want—plus hot dogs, tacos, pizza and beer. Harbor Park’s theme nights make the experience all the more fun whether you’re visiting for baseball card giveaways, Bark in the Park or a business special matinee. Plus, certain nights offer final chances to see the magic of fireworks this summer. Cheer on a home run, try to catch a foul ball, and watch bright colors light up the Norfolk sky. You’ll think it’s the start of summer all over again. See the Tides season schedule.

Explore Plants, Animals and Art

These are the ideal days for visiting one of Norfolk’s fascinating attractions. It’s warm but not too hot, social but not too crowded, and there’s never-ending possibilities of things to see and do. Head to Norfolk Botanical Garden and bask in the blooms of camellias, autumn flowering cherries and Japanese toad lilies. You can even enjoy a picnic in the Garden among the beautiful blooms. Visit over 700 species at the Virginia Zoo. Now is a great time since animals tend to be more active once temperatures start to dip. For a hybrid indoor/outdoor excursion, the Hermitage Museums and Gardens features over 5,000 objects and ever-changing exhibitions, plus lush, waterfront grounds and gardens to wander.

Do and See on the ERT

Norfolk’s Elizabeth River Trail is a 10.5-mile walkable and bikeable path that winds through beautiful neighborhoods and treats wanderers to stunning waterfront views. Now that it’s not hot enough to melt bicycle tires and shoe soles into a puddle, spend a morning or afternoon exploring your favorite parts of Norfolk. Journey past Harbor Park, the Battleship Wisconsin, through the cobblestone streets of Freemason and along the waterfront walkway at The Hague. Stop for a drink and a bite in Chelsea before scoping out the serene nature of Lamberts Point. Here’s some additional ideas for things to do along the Elizabeth River Trail.

Summer Eats + Drinks

Seafood

Nothing quite says summer in Norfolk more than relaxing on an outdoor patio with a plate of crab cakes, shrimp or fresh catch of the day. With our close proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, there’s always an abundance of seafood to enjoy steamed, grilled, raw or fried. Our restaurants run the gamut of dishes and atmospheres. You could be indulging in a soft shell crab sandwich, fries and ice cold beer while overlooking the water for lunch, then savoring delicate diver scallops on white tablecloths for dinner. Here’s a roundup of Norfolk’s seafood spots.

Oysters

Yes, we know oysters are seafood. Trust us when we deem them worthy of their own category. The commonwealth is home to eight oyster regions, with flavors ranging from briny to mild to sweet butter and cream. Norfolk restaurants take great pride in serving oysters that are both local and from waters afar, so there’s always an opportunity to discover a new favorite. We suggest ordering them raw with a side of cocktail sauce, lemon juice or mignonette. You’ll also find them steamed, fried or served Rockefeller or Romano style. Whatever you’re craving, these Norfolk oyster bars are ideal for shucking and slurping.

Barbecue

There’s technically no wrong time of year to enjoy barbecue, but savoring it in the summer is reminiscent of backyard gatherings, family reunions and that irresistible, smoky char filling the air and making mouths water. There’s something quite satisfying about biting into a sandwich piled high with warm brisket or pulled pork, dripping with tangy sauce and cooled down with a dollop of house-made coleslaw. Plus, when football season rolls around, you know those cravings are simply going to intensify. So, put in the legwork now by trying these top barbecue joints in Norfolk

Ice Cream and Gelato

It would be a real shame to end summer—or any summer meal, for that matter—without a scoop of velvety ice cream or gelato. Indeed, there’s no better way to cool down and satisfy a sweet tooth at the same time than with a sundae, cone or shake. When it comes to options, Norfolk has quite the cream of the crop. There’s s’mores ice cream, nitrogen-whipped treats, rolled ice cream, plus creamy and fruity gelatos. For a little factual cherry on top, Norfolk is home to the original waffle cone, and you can order one created from the very same machine rolled out in 1904. Cool down at these hot spots.

Breweries

Breweries are a year-round staple in Norfolk (why else would they have seasonal beers?), but the end of summer and early fall are exciting times to visit these locally loved establishments. Want to bask in the warmth of endless summer days and firefly-dotted evenings? Choose a refreshing light summer ale. Want to pretend the leaves are starting to change? Many breweries will already have their autumn options ready to pour, so go ahead and try that Oktoberfest or pumpkin ale you’ve been eyeing. Here’s a list of Norfolk breweries to get you started.

Norfolk Restaurants with Great Hard Cider Selections

One of our favorite things about autumn is the amazing lineup of fall flavors at Norfolk’s breweries. There’s the Pumpkin Spiced Latte Ale at COVA Brewing Co., Outta Yer Gourd pumpkin ale from Smartmouth Brewing Co. just to name a few. Every now and then, however, we like to break away from the popular pumpkin sips and get a little fruitier with autumn’s prized jewel: the apple. While Norfolk isn’t home to any true cideries, we do have a good number of restaurants that carry great selections of hard ciders, including many from Virginia. Sips may change with the season, but overall, here are the best Norfolk restaurants to find hard ciders.

The Birch

@thebirchbar, Instagram

Situated in Norfolk’s Chelsea Neighborhood, The Birch has been long praised for its fantastic, often hard-to-find selections of craft beer. One thing you may not know is that this delightful beer bar features five carefully selected, rotating ciders (and often meads) on tap. There’s currently Aragon 1904, an 8.6% ABV traditional cider, along with a 6% ABV Basque Cider from Spain. Other options include Valley Roots dry cider blend, Pollination Blossom Honey Cider and a red sangria on tap for something a little different.

COVA Brewing Co.

If breweries were placed in a sandbox, COVA would surely win a gold star for playing well with others. In addition to brewing their own delicious beer, COVA features guest taps to celebrate the fruits of other brewers’ labor. They generally strive to have at least one cider on tap, with Blue Toad’s Blue Raspberry Granny Light being a recent crisp and easily drinkable option.

Grain

Courtesy of Ali Zaman, VTC

Quite possibly one of the most excidering things to hit a drink menu is Grain’s cider flight! For just $13, you can taste four ciders including options from Austin Eastciders, McKenzie’s, Downeast and the ever-popular Bold Rock. Already know what you like? Order a full size of your favorite cider in a glass or even a growler.

Hank’s Filling Station

Known for their delicious barbecue, backyard games and rotating selection of taps, Hank’s is an ideal place to kick back with a beverage on a crisp fall day, especially when cozying up to their irresistible firepits. On tap, look for Back Bay Farmhouse Brewing Company’s 6.7% ABV Apple Blossom Cider and Bold Rock’s 4.7% ABV Berry Peach, both available as 16-ounce pours. Don’t forget to peek past the digital board of taps because you’ll get a great glimpse of canned hard ciders inside the refrigerated glass case, just waiting to be purchased, poured and enjoyed.

The Veil

Norfolk’s only brewery that creates its own cider, The Veil offers Stay, an enjoyable cider conditioned in oak foudres for 12 weeks. Full of flavor, this one drinks like a cider but packs a punch at 8% ABV, so sip slowly and leisurely.

Other Options

Ciders aren’t necessarily a guarantee at these restaurants, but we’ve been known to have some luck finding Blue Toad Hard Cider (Roseland, Va.) at Elation Brewing, Potter’s Craft Cider (Charlottesville, Va.) at Alkaline and Potter’s beloved Farmhouse Dry at Crudo Nudo (temporarily closed for repairs as of Aug. 2025).

Norfolk College Guide for Students

Welcome to your college experience in Norfolk, VA! Whether you’re enrolled at Old Dominion University, Tidewater Community College or Norfolk State University—and regardless if you’re a first year student, transfer student or living local and commuting to campus, we’re glad you’re here. Norfolk is a melting pot of people, places and ideas, and it’s an ideal spot to call home during your time at college and perhaps after!

Centrally located along the mid-Atlantic coast, with easy access from Norfolk International Airport, AMTRAK train station and two interstate highways, Norfolk is as easy to get to as it is to get around! Our summers are balmy, and our winters are mild, lending to an enjoyable atmosphere during all four seasons. The culture in Norfolk is diverse, vibrant and ever-changing, allowing the movers, shakers and future leaders (that’s you) to be part of a welcoming community and make it your own. At VisitNorfolk, we’re here to help you chart your course and explore as much of Norfolk as possible—on your campus and beyond—to truly experience the city that will help shape your memories and always welcome you back.

Transportation/Getting Around

There’s much to see and do, so plan on wandering out of the dorm and into some fun. Start by getting acquainted with Norfolk’s neighborhoods, each unique and worth checking out by foot or via bike or scooter. No car? No problem. Here are some options for getting around.

University Shuttles

By now, you may already know that your university offers a free shuttle service for students. At ODU, Monarch Transit provides fixed-route bus service to all academic areas, residence halls, parking locations and athletic fields—plus on the weekends, they offer stops to destinations including Ghent. NSU’s shuttle service travels from the East Campus to the West Campus and even offers free shuttle service for students attending classes on both NSU and ODU campuses. In addition, there’s a weekend shuttle service transporting students to commercial destinations.

Ride the Tide

Norfolk’s very own light rail operates right by NSU at Harbor Park, taking travelers to destinations like Ghent, the Chrysler Museum of Art and the MacArthur Memorial. The light rail operates daily. Students at TCC, NSU and ODU are encouraged to purchase an HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) GoPass365 so that you can ride any HRT light rail, bus or even ferry as many times as you want within the period of the pass and hours of operation.

Bus Passes

HRT’s buses will take passengers just about anywhere they want or need to go, with multiple convenient stops along the way. Remember: a GoPass365 is valid for all of HRT’s transportation options, including the bus. HRT also offers Paratransit service for persons who, because of a disability, cannot utilize a fixed bus route service. Passengers who need to utilize the Paratransit service must fill out an application; once certified, riders can use the service for any purpose within the service area.

Bikes and Scooters

If you brought your bike from home, you’ll be happy to know that Norfolk has nearly 60 miles of dedicated bike lanes and shared lane markings, giving you plenty of safe streets to pedal from Point A to B. If you didn’t bring a bike or want to go a tad faster, you can rent an electric bike from E-Bike Alley, located Downtown. Another great option is Lime E-Scooters and E-Bikes. Lime deploys up to 1,100 scooters and 500 e-bikes across the city. You can rent both through the Lime app, which will help you find vehicles near you and unlock them. Pricing for scooters and bikes is $3 per ride for the first six minutes, then $0.32 per minute after. We know you’re independent and ready to make your own choices as college students, but just a quick reminder from mom: don’t forget a helmet!

Restaurants Near Campus

ODU

Students can find a plethora of dining options, most within walking distance on Monarch Way or in nearby Larchmont. Whether you’re looking for much-needed caffeine as you’re cramming for exams, a laid-back atmosphere to watch the game with friends or a new favorite weekend hangout spot, here are some of the best restaurants near ODU

NSU

Hop on The Tide light rail for a quick ride Downtown. You’ll be immersed in a foodie paradise, all within walking distance. Spend some time browsing Selden Market, filled with locally-owned shops, plus dining options like Stockpot (healthy comfort food) and S’Mores Amore (homemade marshmallows toasted on the spot). Play some games during dinner at Circuit Social.

TCC

Tidewater Community College is situated in the heart of downtown Norfolk, affording students access to many restaurants within easy walking distance. Among the more popular eateries for students include Famous Uncle Al’s Hotdogs and Fries, Pokey, Major Phillie’s Cheesesteaks, Hokkaido and many, many more.

Free Activities

Living on a college budget isn’t the easiest, but here in Norfolk, that won’t stop you from living it up. Norfolk has many free activities to enjoy between classes and on the weekends. During the warmer months, head to Ocean View and East Beach for a day of relaxing. Enjoy a self-guided tour of Norfolk’s mural art in the NEON District. On cold or rainy days, spend an afternoon wandering through the Hermitage, d’Art Center and Chrysler Museum plus nearby Perry Glass Studio, which offers free glassblowing demonstrations at noon Wednesday through Sunday. All of these are free Norfolk museums worth getting to know. Finally, there’s a reason we’re called Mermaid City. Norfolk’s iconic mermaids, each with their own personality, can be found throughout the city. Go on a mermaid scavenger hunt to see how many you can find. In addition to these, many Norfolk attractions offer student discounts, so research before going, and bring your student ID along.

Quiet Places to Study

When you’re cramming for a big exam or writing an important paper and your roommates are, well … not on the same page, you’ll want a quiet place to get the work done. Try one of Norfolk’s public libraries, including Slover, featuring computers and internet access, interactive displays, a design studio and a video production studio. If you need a pick-me-up, cozy up at one of these Norfolk coffee shops and buzz through your work with an extra shot of espresso. If you’re an outdoorsy type, head to one of Norfolk’s parks like TowneBank Fountain Park, Town Point Park or the Pagoda & Oriental Garden.

Ways to Stay Active

College is about learning lots, making friends and having fun, but it’s also important to stay active. Physical activity is directly linked to mental and emotional wellness, all important aspects of your health to maintain during college and beyond. Spend some time walking or biking along the 10.5-mile Elizabeth River Trail, and get to know Norfolk better in the process. Climb to new heights at the city’s own rock-climbing gym, Latitude Climbing + Fitness. Explore our waterways by renting a kayak and paddling along the Lafayette River. Finally, check our events calendar for pop-up yoga happenings. Bonus: Some experiences involve baby goats!

Best Ice Cream and Gelato Shops in Norfolk

There’s no better way to cool down in the hot summer months (or indulge any time of year) than by visiting some ice cream shops. You may already know that the original waffle cone was created right here in Norfolk, but did you also know you can delight in, Thai rolled ice cream and ethereal selections of gelato all within our city? Here are some of the hottest places for the coolest treats in Norfolk.

Blyss Ice Cream and Desserts

BLYSS owner Bria Suggs

Located at 112 Granby St. in the heart of Downtown Norfolk, Blyss serves ice cream cups, cones, sundaes and milkshakes with the following flavors: cookies and cream, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, strawberry cheesecake, pistachio, cotton candy and vegan cookie.

Doumar’s

Every day is ice cream day at Doumar’s where they crank out creamy shakes and ice cream sundaes in their nostalgic diner that’s been operating for more than a century. They’re most known for their handmade waffle cones, rolled right in front of your eyes on the original machine built in 1904, but you also can’t go wrong with their shortcakes, splits, sundaes and shakes, most of which come with whipped cream and a classic cherry on top.

Lolly’s Creamery

@mother1auren, Instagram

Taste the joy in every scoop of Lolly’s ice cream. Originally churned in Virginia Beach, Lolly’s made their way to Norfolk, bringing with them a creamy craving we can’t deny. The Lolly’s brand encompasses three things: joy, community and generosity. Try their classic flavors like strawberry, real deal vanilla and mint chocolate chip, and also be on the lookout for their monthly rotating flavors and weekly releases.

On Ice

@on_ice2, Instagram

If you thought all ice cream was created equally, think again. At On Ice, located near Naval Station Norfolk, the made-from-scratch batches are created in a unique, nitrogen-based method, transforming a simple ice cream shop visit into a fascinating show and learning experience. Choose from sundae flavors like Chocolate Explosion or Strawberry Cream Pie, or make your own by combining ice cream flavors with fun toppings. Enjoy them traditionally, or opt for the N₂.I.C.E.D. version in which ingredients are whipped into a sphere and flash frozen for an airy, crunchy texture.

S’Mores Amore

S’mores have been a Downtown staple ever since Owner Duane Dinio first invited customers to “get fired up” at his Selden Market shop. Picture a perfect square of graham cracker crust, layered with a brownie or blondie and topped with a marshmallow toasted to perfection right before your eyes. If that wasn’t heavenly enough, S’mores Amore added an ice cream menu that melds handmade ice cream with chunks of S’mores Amore brownie or blondie pieces for a cool way to enjoy the ultimate s’mores experience.

Strawberry Fields

If strawberry fields are forever, that’s how long we’ll be obsessed with this gem of a gelato shop in Norfolk’s Ghent neighborhood. Each day, their gelato is made from scratch with new flavors consistently posted on their social media. From ooey gooey cake to brown butter pecan, there’s surely a flavor to suit your fancy. Check out this City with Bite episode on Strawberry Fields to learn more

Urban Ice

You’ve had ice cream in a bowl, cone, blender, cake and sandwich, but have you had it rolled? Thai rolled ice cream is created by pouring liquid ice cream ingredients onto a below-freezing surface, spreading it out, cutting into strips, rolling them up and topping with all sorts of sweet creations. At Urban Ice, you can create your own combination or go with a favorite like Cookie Monster or Mango Tango.
